Celebrate Shelter Pets DAY~

The Shelter Project  and the Fredericton SPCA are dedicating today as Celebrate Shelter Pets Day on Facebook

I have had many pets over the years. some were strays and some were adopted from shelters. The first pet i recall coming from shelter was Charlotte. she was a small, black kitten, who Mom adopted from the Ottawa Humane Society, in 1977. she was a beautiful cat. We did not have her for a long time, for some reason untold to me, after she had kittens in 1978 in NB, she and two of the three kittens went away to find 'new homes'. mom kept one kitten, who lived to be 18.

our current shelter pets are Jake, now over 8 years old. we were working in oromocto at a call center and had one kitty at home, and decided that she needed company. we went to pawsative rewards, which was a satellite office for the oromocto SPCA and there he was, in the area they had the kittens and young cats. he was perched high on a shelf inside, from the moment i clapped eyes on him, his name was Jake and he was going to be our 'cowardly lion'.

mom was thinking she would like to try having a cat again, after her dear Sport passed away, so she and i headed to the Fredericton SPCA in search of a kitty. Tink was a real loving cat, and so dainty. they told us she was at least a year old (that was 2006). mom liked her, so tink went home with her. mom got ill, and had trouble looking after Tink, so she came to live with us. she is a handful by times, but our lives are richer for having her in them.

we had just lost mom's / our dog Seth, and independent of each other, k and i were looking on the FSPCA site at the dogs they had in their care. we both kept coming back to Kane, a 10 month old (approx) shepherd mix with the happiest eyes of any dog we'd ever seen. he was meant to be ours. we took a drive out to meet him, took him for a walk, played with him in their exercise area, and fell in love with him. we had to make sure he was good with Murphy, so we had J bring murphy over on the day we were going to make our decision. murphy and kane are like two peas in a pod. brothers. they have a wonderful time together, and we are so fortunate to have Kane in our lives. he is our 'heart healer'. and we love him dearly.

if you are looking into sharing your life with a pet, please go to your local animal shelter or humane society or animal rescue league and adopt. you will not be sorry~ make today GREAT, poet
